In 1986-87 Eilat Mazar excavated alongside with her grandfather prof. Benjamin Mazar at the Ophel (the biblical acropolis of Very first Temple Period Jerusalem), on behalf of the Institute of Archaeology of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The outcomes from their excavations are released in Qedem 29 (1989).
Given that then, she has performed a number of excavation seasons at the Ophel internet site, revealing Very first Temple Period of time monumental structures, such as a town gate, towers, and a royal composition, recommended by her to be component of the town wall of Jerusalem, created for the duration of the tenth century by King Solomon, as explained in 1 Kings 3:one. According to E. Mazar, \“It indicates that at that time, the tenth century, in Jerusalem there was a regime capable of carrying out this sort of building.\”
Given that 2009 the Ophel excavations and publications have been funded by Daniel Mintz and Meredith Berkman. Numerous students from Herbert W. Armstrong University in Edmond, Oklahoma, have volunteered in these excavations, and participated in the subsequent processing of finds. Excellent benefits from the new Ophel excavations are introduced at the web internet site established by Mazar and the College: keytodavidscity.com. This is in continuation of a near romantic relationship between the University and the Mazars, likely again to the nineteen sixties, at that time in association with her grandfather Benjamin Mazar’s Temple Mount Excavations.
