In 1986-87 Eilat Mazar excavated together with her grandfather prof. Benjamin Mazar at the Ophel (the biblical acropolis of Initial Temple Period of time Jerusalem), on behalf of the Institute of Archaeology of the Hebrew College of Jerusalem. The results from their excavations are released in Qedem 29 (1989).
Since then, she has executed several excavation seasons at the Ophel site, revealing Very first Temple Interval monumental constructions, which includes a city gate, towers, and a royal composition, suggested by her to be element of the metropolis wall of Jerusalem, created during the tenth century by King Solomon, as explained in 1 Kings 3:1. In accordance to E. Mazar, \“It implies that at that time, the tenth century, in Jerusalem there was a regime able of carrying out this kind of development.\”
Since 2009 the Ophel excavations and publications have been funded by Daniel Mintz and Meredith Berkman. Several pupils from Herbert W. Armstrong College in Edmond, Oklahoma, have volunteered in these excavations, and participated in the subsequent processing of finds. Outstanding benefits from the new Ophel excavations are offered at the web site proven by Mazar and the Higher education: keytodavidscity.com. This is in continuation of a shut relationship in between the Higher education and the Mazars, going again to the sixties, at that time in association with her grandfather Benjamin Mazar’s Temple Mount Excavations.
